TASTE OF
VENEZUELA

The Venezuelan Culture Days have been held annually since 2013 by the Venezuelan Canadian Association of Calgary in collaboration with Cantares Venezuelan Cultural Foundation (VCD). The purpose of the event is to introduce the Calgarian community to the diverse representations of Venezuelan culture through folklore, dance, music, film, theater, gastronomy, and crafts, which are divided into 4 events.

Gala Concert: THE PORTENTOUS VOICE OF A FEELING. IVIS CEQUEA. She began her artistic journey at a very young age. Her interpretation and recording consecrate her as one of her most forceful voices, achieving an immediate impact. Currently, she is touring the United States with the romantic pop ballad show CANCIONES DEL ALMA, consolidating her name among the best Hispanic talent. 

Folk music, bagpipes, boleros, pop ballads and performances with a symphony orchestra are proof of her mastery and excellence when it comes to singing. She has shared the stage with artists like her; Floria Marquez, Toña Granados, Nancy Toro, and Betzaida Machado in “Ellas Son Boleros. She has also sung as a guest of the Simon Bolivar Conservatory Orchestra in the Jose Felix Rivas room of the Teresa Carreño Theater and with  Eddy Marcano in “Viva Aldemaro” together with Rafael “Pollo” Brito. 
 
In the United States, she appeared at the Dr. Phillips Center in the City of Orlando in a Tribute to Maestro Simon Diaz. 
 
She has a recording as a soloist entitled “Otro Tiempo de Boleros” together with outstanding Venezuelan musicians and has Emilio Lovera, Jorge Luis Chacin & Marcial Izturiz as guests; she has also recorded with Neguito Borjas and Nelson Arrieta. 
 
IVIS CEQUEA is a singer who gives herself wholeheartedly to conquer the public with mastery and interpretation, proving to be one of the best Venezuelan voices.
 

Spanish Theater:The themes performed on stage are done by local artists. The group invited this year is ExpresArte Theater Club. On this occasion, it will be presented two monologues “EVA” and “CABARET” from two Venezuelan playwrights, Lupe Gehrenbeck and Néstor Caballero. “EVA” repossesses the role of Eva in the history of the creation of humanity. Performed by Mariana Márquez and Directed by Gina Pavone. While “CABARET” tells a love story under the dictatorship of Pérez Jiménez in Venezuela during the late 50’s. Performed by Gina Pavone and Directed by Geraldine Fuenmayor. All the cast and the directors are Venezuelan -Canadian

 Movie Night: The movie to be screened is REVERON: A love story that begins in 1924 and ends in 1954, on the shores of the fabulous Caribbean Sea, which recreates the work of the great Venezuelan artist Armando Reveron, his relationship with Juanita, his eternal companion and muse, and the friends who frequented him, the construction and recreation of the objects that formed his world, the obsession with tropical light, the development of his mental illness and the playful, sensitive and painful universe within that home workshop and arcadia called “El Castillete”.

Taste of Venezuela: Food and Cultural Fair: a tour around Venezuela through its flavours, crafts, music, and folklore dance to showcase the vibrant Venezuelan culture. In this festival of flavours, all the community will have a unique opportunity to taste some of the typical Venezuelan food: arepas (corn bread), cachapas (sweet cornbread), cachitos (bread filled with ham), pastelitos (made with flour filled with beef, chicken, and cheese), tres leches (Three Milks Cake), bienmesabe (taste good to me cake) polvorosas (Venezuelan cookies), quesillo (flan), and much more. 

Folk Dance (Pasos de Venezuela, Dynamic Latin Soul, La Parranda, Folklore Salvadoreño, and Ai es Colombia) ) and Six Bands of Live Music (Estampida Gaitera, Alma Llanera, Mango Sound, Los Majes, Aguaquina , and Adagio ) will also be in the program to showcase Venezuelan people’s and other cultures’ vibrant musicality. Venezuelan artists will exhibit their fabulous arts & crafts.
