English Classes for Seniors

Program Objective

Launched in October 2019, the VCAC English Classes for Seniors program is designed to equip Spanish-speaking seniors with essential vocabulary and the listening, speaking, and writing skills needed to overcome the language barriers that English can present for newcomers. The program aims to help participants integrate successfully into Canadian society by building their confidence in using English in daily life.

As seniors aged 55+ gain a solid foundation in basic vocabulary and grammar, they become more comfortable engaging with English-speaking communities, understanding conversational nuances, and making new social connections. Through this initiative, VCAC fulfills one of its key mandates — supporting community members in adapting to and integrating with Canadian culture.

When completing the four levels of the Basic English Course, students should express themselves and understand conversations and writing. Using grammatical structures and vocabulary that will allow them to communicate during activities in their daily life, such as:

  •  Giving details of their information address, email, telephone number, origin, nationality.
  •  Going shopping, doing grocery, asking for and giving directions, spelling words, asking about something, ordering food in restaurants, describing situations, people, activities, etc.

 Class Structure

  • Vocabulary Introduction
  • Pronunciation and substitution Drills (listening and repeating phrases and sentences with the vocabulary and grammatical structures)
  • The students are involved in different didactic activities, resulting in an easy and enjoyable way to learn English by acting and performing different roles.
