Spanish Classes for English Speakers
Description
Spanish is in the top five most spoken languages globally, and it’s the third most used language on the internet. The course is for people who have no knowledge of the language. It aims to offer students linguistic competence by practicing the four skills of the language: listening, reading, writing, and speaking, allowing them to have a good performance in simple situations of daily life.
General objective
At the end of the course, the student will have developed the communicative competence required to perform adequately in Spanish in simple situations of everyday life.
Specific objectives- Beginner level
In the course, the student will progressively develop competencies to:
• Begin to develop their ability to communicate effectively and express themselves in Spanish
• Understand relatively simple texts on a variety of topics.
• Converse, read, and write using the basic grammatical structures of the Spanish language.
• Converse using the levels of courtesy most used in an everyday situation.
• Introduce themselves and someone else.
• Describe objects
• Understand the difference between the verbs SER and ESTAR
• Properly use fundamental timing indicators
• Conjugate the most useful/common verbs in the present
• Be able to ask simple questions
• Introduce the past tense: preterito indefinido, regular, and some irregular verbs
Spanish Level 1 – SPH-101 Beginners Spanish 1
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the Spanish language to students with no prior knowledge. It includes training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish in its cultural context.
Spanish Level 2 – SPH-102 Beginners Spanish 2
This course is intended for students continuing from SPH 101.
Students will develop basic communicative skills and develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking Spanish skills.
Prerequisite(s): SPH101 or previous knowledge in Spanish by placement test.
Spanish Level 3 – SPH-101 Beginners Spanish 3
This course is intended for students continuing from SPAN 102. Students will continue developing basic communicative skills and improving more reading, writing, listening, and speaking Spanish skills.
Prerequisite(s): SPH102 or previous knowledge in Spanish by placement test
Specific objectives- Intermediate level
In the course, the student will progressively develop competencies to:
• Participate in everyday life conversations (going shopping, ordering food and drinks in a restaurant, etc.)
• Converse, read, and write using more challenging and complex grammatical structure of the Spanish language.
• Compare objects as well as people
• Introduce the most useful prepositions
• Use the past simple of regular and irregular verbs
• Be able to apply the direct objects pronouns (Lo, La, Los, las) while conversing and writing
• Express possession and preferences
• Introduce regular and irregular verbs in the imperfect
• Express obligation or necessity
• Understand the difference between IMPERFECTO and PRETERITO INDEFINIDO
Spanish Level 1 –SPH 201 Intermediate Spanish 1
This course builds on fundamental knowledge and skills. It offers further development of communication skills in Spanish and the study of some cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.
Prerequisite(s): SPH 103 or previous knowledge in Spanish by placement test
Spanish Level 2 –SPH 202 Intermediate Spanish 2
This course is the continuation of Spanish 201. It deals with more challenging and complex grammatical structures and further studies the Spanish-speaking world's social and cultural aspects.
Prerequisite(s): SPH 201 or previous knowledge in Spanish by placement test
Spanish Level 3 –SPH 203 Intermediate Spanish 3
This course is the continuation of Spanish 202. It deals with more complex situations dealing with social interactions, communication, and further aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.
Prerequisite(s): SPH 202 or previous knowledge in Spanish by placement test
Location and Time
Hybrid in person at Community Wise Resource Centre and online.
Duration
Four hours a week during 12 weeks for a total of 48 hours for each level.
